New NSW OHS Act 2000 and Regulation 200118 December 2001From 1 September 2001 important new workplace safety laws come into effect in New South Wales. The NSW Government has introduced the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000 and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001. The Regulation 2001 is a consolidation of all the existing regulations into a one-stop shop which is easier for unions and their members to refer to. The new laws contain provisions that require employers to consult with employees on health and safety matters. Penalties will apply for failure to do so. It also introduces OHS Representatives and maintains OHS Committees. Unions will be rolling out courses for their members and delegates on these changes in the New Year.
